The Refugee Resettlement Support Organization (RRSO) is delighted to present the results of its Voluntary Tax Filing Clinic, an initiative created to support newcomers and community members in meeting their financial obligations and securing the benefits they are entitled to in Canada.

Program Overview

Filing income taxes is a crucial requirement for residents in Canada, but for many newcomers and vulnerable individuals, the process can be overwhelming due to language barriers, limited awareness of the Canadian tax system, or lack of financial resources to hire professional services.

Recognizing this need, RRSO organized a free, volunteer-run tax filing clinic. Our dedicated volunteers, with knowledge of tax regulations and CRA requirements, assisted participants in completing and submitting their returns accurately and on time.

This initiative was more than just a tax service—it was about creating trust, removing barriers, and ensuring that newcomers felt welcomed and supported in their settlement journey.

Key Achievements

• 47 individuals supported, including refugees, immigrants, and other newcomers to Canada.
• All 47 tax returns successfully filed and approved by the CRA, ensuring access to benefits such as GST/HST credits, child and family benefits, and other income-related supports.
• Delivered entirely through volunteer service, demonstrating the spirit of community solidarity and civic responsibility.
• Provided multilingual support (English, Dari/Farsi, Pashto, and other languages as needed), ensuring accessibility for diverse clients.
• Created a welcoming environment where participants could ask questions, learn about the tax system, and feel confident about their financial responsibilities.

Community Impact

The Voluntary Tax Filing Clinic had a significant impact on both the individuals served and the broader community:

• Explore options to provide year-round advisory support, ensuring ongoing assistance for those facing financial challenges.
